Think about the autocomplete feature on your phone's keyboard. If you type "I am on my," your phone will probably suggest "way." It doesn't know where you are going, but it has learned from your texting history that "way" usually follows that sequence of words.
ChatGPT does exactly this, but on a mind-boggling scale. Instead of reading just your text messages, it has read practically the entire public internet: Wikipedia, books, articles, code repositories, and forums.
It acts like a giant probability calculator. If you prompt it with: "The cat sat on the ___"
The AI looks at the math and says:

It picks "mat" and moves on to guess the word after that. Word by word, it builds a sentence.
Why Do AI's Hallucinate?
Understanding that AI is just a probability calculator explains its biggest flaw: making things up (what data scientists call "hallucinations").
Because an LLM doesn't have a database of "facts" to check, it relies entirely on patterns. If you ask it a highly obscure question, it might not have enough data to find a statistically obvious answer. So, what does it do? It does its job: it guesses the most likely next word that sounds plausible, stringing together a beautifully confident, entirely incorrect sentence.
